On September 1, 2026, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, the update to its frontier model family. The most relevant news for engineering teams: up to 45% lower cost on heavily agentic workloads, thanks to a 75% price cut on prompt cache reads.
Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 are, according to Anthropic, the same underlying model with different levels of safeguards. Fable 5.1 is generally available and blocks tasks in high-risk dual-use domains; Mythos 5.1 is only available through trusted access programs, with safeguards designed specifically for legitimate cybersecurity and biological-sciences work. Anthropic describes Fable 5.1 as a leap in intelligence on the hardest reasoning tasks compared to Fable 5, with better judgment on ambiguous work and fewer overconfident wrong answers.
The model is available now through Anthropic's API as claude-fable-5-1, and also on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure — including direct integration into Microsoft Copilot, announced the same day. Fable 5.1 costs roughly 25% less than Fable 5 for typical workloads, and up to 45% less for heavily agentic work, specifically thanks to the cache-read price cut.
