The launch of Perplexity's Comet browser represented a different bet: instead of being just a destination where the user searches, Comet integrates agent capabilities directly into browsing — summarizing a page, comparing prices across open tabs, filling out forms — turning the browser itself into the interface for a persistent AI assistant. This strategy competes directly with Microsoft Copilot integrated into Edge and with the agentic browsing capabilities Google added to Chrome.
For companies evaluating how to give employees a way to search internal information in natural language, Perplexity Enterprise represents an alternative to building that layer in-house on Vertex AI Search or Bedrock Knowledge Bases. Its advantage is implementation time — deploying an enterprise Perplexity instance can take days instead of the weeks it takes to build a custom RAG pipeline — in exchange for less granular control over chunking, ranking, and which specific model processes each query.
One factor that has helped Perplexity's enterprise adoption is its position as a neutral model aggregator — letting you choose between GPT, Claude, or its own models depending on the query — instead of being locked to a single model provider as happens by default with each cloud's native solutions.
