French AI company Mistral AI announced on September 8 a €3 billion Series D led by Samsung Electronics, at a post-money valuation above €21 billion. According to the company itself, it's the largest capital round ever closed by a European tech company.

Who put up the money

Samsung Electronics led the round, with EQT's Scaleup Europe fund and existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads. Participants also include U.S. investors already present from earlier rounds — a16z, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures — alongside new backers such as Advent, BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg itself as a state investor. The valuation nearly doubles the €11.7 billion Mistral reached in its Series C in September 2025, just a year earlier.

The "third way" narrative in AI

French President Emmanuel Macron described the funding as reflecting France and South Korea's shared goal of "building a third way in AI," an explicit reference to reducing dependence on U.S. infrastructure. Mistral plans to use the capital to scale compute, build out its own infrastructure — with a target of 1 gigawatt of European capacity by 2030 — and accelerate commercial expansion, which already covers 20 countries with a focus on government and enterprise customers seeking sovereign control over their AI models.

Mistral AI Series D (announced Sep 8, 2026): - Amount raised: €3 billion (~$3.58 billion USD) - Post-money valuation: €21+ billion (~$24.4 billion USD) - Lead: Samsung Electronics - Co-leads: EQT Scaleup Europe Fund, PSG Equity - Prior valuation (Series C, Sep 2025): €11.7 billion

What it means for businesses in Guatemala and Latin America

For companies in the region evaluating LLM providers, this round reinforces Mistral as a viable alternative to OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google — particularly for organizations with data sovereignty requirements, strict regulatory compliance, or a preference for more openly licensed models. A better-capitalized competitor at the infrastructure and frontier-model layer generally translates into better pricing and availability for enterprise customers, including those operating outside the United States who want to diversify away from a single AI vendor.
