Investor money no longer chases generic chatbots — it chases agents that solve a specific business problem and, increasingly, need their own layer of security and governance to operate without constant supervision.
AI agent startup funding reached $1.8 billion across more than 12 rounds during July 2026, led by enterprise automation and developer-tool categories. Sequoia Capital, Index Ventures, and Andreessen Horowitz dominated deal flow, while average valuations climbed 40% quarter over quarter to around $280 million. Enterprise automation agents captured 58% of total capital, reflecting investor preference for B2B monetization over consumer-facing bets.
Hush Security raised a $30 million Series A, with Akamai Technologies joining as a strategic investor alongside existing investors Battery Ventures and YL Ventures — bringing the company's total capital raised to $41 million. Hush's core thesis is that AI agents already operate faster than enterprise security teams can control them manually, leaving a governance gap no traditional security stack was designed to cover.
Encore AI, an agent-based customer interaction platform explicitly designed to generate revenue rather than simply deflect support calls, raised $30 million in its Series A, led by Team8, Planven, and The Garage, with participation from Lukatz and several major commercial banks and insurers as strategic investors.
The pattern connecting both rounds — and much of the month's funding — is a clear shift away from general-purpose chatbots toward specialized vertical agents, each solving a concrete, measurable business problem. This is consistent with what we covered in our report on the state of AI agents in production: the generic experimentation phase is giving way to specialized deployments with clear return metrics, and now also to a whole emerging category dedicated exclusively to governing and securing those agents once they're in production.
