A billion weekly users is an ad audience the size of a major social network — and OpenAI just decided it's time to monetize it as one, starting with Europe.

The Expansion, in Numbers

OpenAI began serving ads in ChatGPT to users in 31 European markets starting August 24, 2026 — including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Austria — six months after starting to test the format in the US. Advertisers initially access it through OpenAI's Ads Solutions team and agency partners, with self-service access via Ads Manager coming later.

Who Sees the Ads (and Who Doesn't)

Ads only show to people on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions remain completely ad-free — a clean segmentation that separates the product that monetizes by volume from the one that monetizes by subscription, and one that likely keeps enterprise customers using ChatGPT Enterprise for internal work at ease.

The Audience Size Behind the Decision

ChatGPT now reaches 1 billion weekly active users, with close to 20% showing commercial intent in their conversations — the signal that makes the format attractive to advertisers. OpenAI's ad revenue already grew more than 25% since early August 2026, even before this European expansion.

What It Means for the Enterprise AI Ecosystem

Monetizing the free tier through ads is the same move search engines and social networks made before OpenAI — and it confirms that ChatGPT is shifting from a "subscription and borrowed-compute-funded product" to a hybrid model with its own advertising engine. For marketing teams in Latin America already tracking how generative search is changing brand discovery (see our coverage of ChatGPT Search), this expansion is the first concrete sign that same channel is starting to have a paid component, not just organic — worth watching whether the ads model reaches Latin America, and under what rules.
