On August 31, the U.S. Department of Defense added OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI's Grok for Government to GenAI.mil, its centralized, secure generative AI portal — which until then had only offered Google Gemini. This isn't a pilot: 1.7 million of the Pentagon's 3 million employees already use the platform.

What GenAI.mil is

GenAI.mil launched last year as a centralized portal giving Department of Defense personnel access to commercial frontier models without having to send sensitive data through standard consumer channels. It's essentially a governance layer sitting between thousands of employees and the AI models they were already using informally — replacing uncontrolled use with audited access and an exemption from the data collection typical of consumer products.

Three providers, three distinct roles

With this week's addition, GenAI.mil now offers three models with differentiated roles. ChatGPT Mil focuses on chat, files, projects and custom GPTs, built for document-heavy routine work — administration, logistics, planning and policy. Grok for Government brings distinct reasoning modes and reusable playbooks aimed at supply-chain tracking and research. Gemini, present since launch, rounds out the lineup.

GenAI.mil by the numbers: - Onboarded unique users: 1.7 million - Total DoD personnel: 3 million - Models available: Gemini, ChatGPT Mil, Grok for Government - Date ChatGPT and Grok were added: August 31, 2026

Why this isn't just a government story

What matters here isn't that the Pentagon uses AI — it's how it's deploying it. Instead of picking a single vendor and forcing the whole organization onto it, they built an intermediary layer that offers several frontier models under one security and compliance perimeter, letting each team pick the right tool for the task.

The pattern worth copying: a single internal portal that brokers access to multiple commercial models, with centralized logging, data controls and usage policy, instead of letting every employee run their own personal ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini account unsupervised. It's the same problem any regulated enterprise faces — banking, healthcare, local government — and the Pentagon's solution confirms that multi-model governance, not picking one "winning" provider, is the strategy winning out at scale.
