OpenAI will retire the official DALL-E GPT within ChatGPT on August 30, 2026, multiple trade outlets confirmed. The company recommends users download any images they want to keep before that date, while redirecting image generation toward ChatGPT Images.
What's being retired is the standalone GPT called "DALL-E" within ChatGPT — one of the oldest and most recognizable ways to generate images on the platform — not image generation capability in general. OpenAI has been moving that functionality toward ChatGPT Images, which has become the company's primary destination for creating and editing AI-generated images inside ChatGPT.
User-created custom GPTs with image generation enabled will keep working normally; the retirement specifically affects the official DALL-E GPT, not third-party integrations built on top of that capability.
This retirement adds to a growing list of AI product deprecations in 2026 as providers consolidate redundant features into single, more modern surfaces. For teams integrating AI tools into business processes, it's a reminder that major AI providers' tools get updated and discontinued at a much faster pace than traditional enterprise software.
