Google announced on August 5, 2026 that Demis Hassabis, co-founder and CEO of Google DeepMind since 2010, is stepping back from day-to-day operations to become chairman of the AI unit, while also keeping the title of Alphabet chief scientist and continuing to lead the pharmaceutical spinoff Isomorphic Labs.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, until now CTO of Google DeepMind, is promoted to senior vice president and reports directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai — taking over daily operations of the Gemini model development teams, frontier research, and the Gemini app's product and developer areas.
The reshuffle comes alongside the departure of Jeff Dean, Alphabet's chief scientist, who is leaving the company to found a startup called Discovery Loop, focused on building AI models capable of improving themselves with minimal or no human intervention — a research area considered both high-risk and of high strategic interest across every frontier lab.
It's the first time DeepMind has operated with a corporate chairman separate from its executive leadership, a structure that suggests Google is seeking greater operational stability in the unit's daily operations, even at the cost of reducing its founder's direct visibility into daily decisions.

For enterprise architectures built on Gemini or the Agent Development Kit, a leadership change of this magnitude usually doesn't alter the product roadmap in the short term, but it's worth watching: Kavukcuoglu comes from a technical role (CTO), not product, which could translate into a more aggressive focus on frontier research and less on the speed at which features reach Vertex AI relative to competitors — something that will become clearer with upcoming releases from the Gemini family.
