Fable 5 is, in terms of raw capability, the strongest model Anthropic offers. It also costs twice as much as Opus 5. The question that matters isn't which is better — it's on which tasks that difference actually shows.
Fable 5 (general availability June 9, 2026) is the most capable widely-available Claude model, sitting above Opus in raw capability. Opus 4.8/5 remains the flagship model for hard reasoning. Both share a 1-million-token context window — the difference isn't there, it's in reasoning depth and writing quality on the most demanding tasks.
Fable 5 costs $10/$50 per million tokens, while Opus 5 is significantly cheaper at $5/$25 — exactly double the price for the extra capability. It's not a marginal price difference you can ignore in a high-volume architecture.
Fable 5 should be used when the stakes are high and quality is non-negotiable — your hardest reasoning and your most demanding writing. For routine tasks, the marginal gain over Opus or Sonnet rarely justifies the cost. Opus 4.8 is the model you reach for when the task is genuinely hard — multi-step reasoning, complex code, dense analysis, or anything where a wrong answer is expensive; Fable 5 represents the premium tier for the most demanding applications where output quality matters most and cost is a secondary constraint.
The safest way to decide is empirical, not intuitive: run the same set of tasks representative of your specific use case against both Opus 5 and Fable 5, and measure whether the quality difference is perceptible for your particular case. If Opus 5 already meets the quality bar you need, paying double for Fable 5 doesn't buy anything real — the premium only makes sense once you've confirmed Opus falls short on your specific task, not as a preventive default.
Many production architectures use Fable 5 only for a very narrow subset of the highest-stakes tasks (for example, the final drafting of a legal document or the final review of critical code), while the rest of the pipeline runs on Opus 5 or Sonnet 5 — reserving the more expensive model for the exact point where the cost of an error far exceeds the price difference between models.
