Apple held its annual event at Apple Park on September 9 — the first under John Ternus, who took over as CEO on September 1 after Tim Cook stepped down following 15 years leading the company — and put artificial intelligence front and center with a new Siri, five Apple Foundation Models, and the A20 Pro chip.

A Siri that acts, not just answers

The new AI-powered Siri is launching first in English alongside iOS 27, officially set for release on September 14, with five additional languages coming in October. The difference from the previous Siri is functional: Apple describes it as able to understand data across different apps, answer questions based on what's on screen, and act autonomously within the user's applications.

Absent in the European Union and China

The new AI-powered Siri won't be available in either China or the European Union, where Apple remains locked in an ongoing dispute with regulators over the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This marks the third time in just a few years that a core Apple AI feature has been kept out of a major regulated market for compliance reasons rather than technical ones.

The first event under John Ternus

The event also marked Ternus's debut as the company's leader. Tim Cook moved into the role of executive chairman of Apple's board, a position in which — according to the company's own statement — he will continue to be involved in global regulatory relations. Ternus, who led hardware engineering from 2021 to 2026, arrives with an explicit mandate to steer Apple "into the era of artificial intelligence." Alongside Siri and the five new Apple Foundation Models, the company unveiled the A20 Pro chip and new AI features for Apple Watch, including Audio Intelligence, Readiness, and Health Age, plus new photo authenticity safeguards.

For companies managing corporate iPhone fleets or BYOD policies in Guatemala and the region: Apple's AI feature availability is no longer uniform across regions, and the new Siri's ability to act autonomously within apps adds a new variable to MDM (mobile device management) policy. Before rolling out iOS 27, IT teams should review which AI features are enabled by default and whether corporate security and privacy policies need adjusting.
